New York City-based Hot On Broadway was tapped by Medtronic to perform for its nearly 1,000 attendees at the 2008 Republican National Convention. The venue was in Minneapolis at the world headquarters of Medtronic, global leader in medical technology.
As the party would sprawl across the company's headquarters - both indoors and outdoors - the production must be eye-catching and draw attendees together toward the main stage.
Another logistical challenge was the location of the main stage, which was located in the company's atrium which had floor to ceiling windows. This translated to setting all lighting effects during daylight hours - with no chance to revise lighting before the evening's production. After reviewing the demographics of the attendees, Hot On Broadway and Medtronic agreed that pop songs from Jersey Boys and songs of the era supplied the best themed entertainment programme. Complete with a cast of four men from Broadway - including two performers from the original Broadway cast of Jersey Boys - they delivered a 45-minute Broadway show with instantly recognisable hit songs. With choreography and costumes that harkened back to the '50s and '60s, as well as scripted dialogue that spoke to the theme and message of the event, the unique show was designed so that it connected with every member of the audience.
Through careful consultation, Broadway's experienced team of technicians identified high-energy lighting looks that immeasurably added to the rock 'n' roll experience.
As the performers hit the stage, the attendees swarmed the platform, coming in from all areas of the building. Responding to the rock-concert theme, the audience screamed, sang along, and snapped pictures of the performers. Couples throughout the atrium danced to the ballads being sung onstage. After the finale, the performers found themselves mobbed by delegates eager to have pictures taken.
For a performance that lasted 45 minutes, the cast meet-and-greet and photo sessions lasted well over an hour beyond the show.
Final verdict: It was a blockbuster. Hot On Broadway, which has been in business for 15 years, is a leading corporate entertainment agency, counting among its clients "best companies and associations, large and small." It works exclusively with stars from Broadway's biggest shows. |
